5G Drone Control Module – Puffin Board

Ask ChatGPT: Puffin Board

Powered by a CAT 4 4G module — the Quectel EG25 — offering downlink speeds of up to 150 Mbps and uplink speeds of 50 Mbps. It features dual MIMO antennas for enhanced signal stability and performance, and also supports GPS

5G Drone Control Module

Ultra Low Latency: RTT as low as 50ms

Puffin leverages WebRTC technology — the same low-latency protocol used by Zoom — for both video transmission and remote control. This ensures real-time responsiveness, with video latency as low as 100 ms under optimal network conditions.

Easy Assemly

Puffin is extremely easy to integrate into any drone. Simply connect its UART port to the flight controller and provide a 4–16V power supply — no complex setup required. Puffin supports its built-in MIPI camera, and also allows external RTSP cameras for flexible video input options.

Remote Control

Puffin lets you fly your drone from anywhere — even without leaving your home. Build an inspection drone and perform remote inspections from the comfort of your home office

Q&A

Q: Why 4G, why not 5G ?

We chose 4G instead of 5G for Puffin for two key reasons. First, 4G modules are significantly more affordable, allowing us to offer Puffin at a much lower cost. Second, in real-world usage, 4G often performs more reliably than 5G — especially in areas without full 5G coverage, where network switching can lead to instability. That said, if you specifically require 5G connectivity, we also offer custom solutions. Feel free to contact us for tailored options.

Q: How good is latency really ?

Puffin’s round-trip time (RTT) latency is typically around 50–100 ms. The delay mainly comes from two sources:
1. Camera encoding latency, this is the most significant factor. Many drone-mounted RTSP gimbals introduce 200–300 ms of delay. In comparison, Puffin’s built-in MIPI camera achieves an encoding latency of about 150 ms.
2. Network conditions – In a stable, high-quality network, latency can be as low as 50 ms. However, in poor network environments it may rise to 100 ms or even cause disconnections. As a result, the glass-to-glass latency (from camera input to display output) when using Puffin is generally in the range of 200–250 ms.

Q: Do you charge cloud fees or any other hidden fees

Absolutely not !  Puffin does not charge any cloud fees or hidden fees. You only pay for the hardware itself. Any data usage costs depend on your own SIM card and network provider.

Q: Do I need a special sim card

No, you can simply use a regular SIM card from your phone — no special card is needed. Please note that Puffin does not support eSIM, so a physical SIM card is required.

Q: Is puffin compatible with SIYI or Skydroid

Puffin is compatible with SIYI and Skydroid. You can use a switch to view two video streams simultaneously, and you can also control the flight controller at the same time through the MAVLink protocol with Siyi or Skydroid

Q: What kind of Flight Controller is supported

Puffin supports any flight controller running ArduPilot or PX4.  Communication is handled via serial connection using the MAVLink2 protocol. If you’ve ever set up systems with SIYI, Skydroid, or other radios that rely on serial communication, you’ll find configuring Puffin to be just as straightforward

Q: Does puffin work with ERLS or SBUS

Puffin definitely works with ELRS and SBUS, since both ArduPilot and PX4 natively support a wide range of control devices. Puffin itself communicates with the flight controller via the MAVLink2 protocol. However, Puffin does not directly send or receive ELRS or SBUS signals on its own—the flight controller handles that compatibility.

Q: Is puffin comptabile with walksnail or DJI

Puffin is not compatible with Walksnail or DJI O3/O4, nor can it make use of their cameras. Walksnail and DJI O3/O4 are dedicated video transmission systems, whereas Puffin is designed to provide both video transmission and control in a single integrated solution.

Q: Can I use puffin alone to control the drone

You can certainly use Puffin on its own to control the drone. However, we highly recommend adding an SBUS or ELRS controller as a backup. Please note that 4G signals in open environments can be unpredictable and may drop out at times. Therefore, it is crucial to configure your failsafe mode properly to ensure safe operation.
